As young women Mills & Boon novelist Ida Cook and her sister, Louise, became passionate about opera, travelling the world to see their favourite singers. They befriended many of these stars, one of whom, in 1934, asked the sisters to help a Jewish friend escape Germany. This was the first of many people they rescued.
