In August 1939 a 27-year-old American ethnologist mysteriously commits suicide in Brazil, while studying among the tribes of the Amazonian basin. He left behind him seven letters, alleging different motives in many of the letters. The narrator of the novel becomes obsessed with searching for an eighth letter he is sure must have existed.
