The story begins with Campbell, aged 14, in a police cell in Glasgow. He's been charged with stealing books. At 15, he becomes an apprentice printer, but gave that up in order to 'go on the road' fulfilling his ambition to be a bit of a 'vagabond'. It continues to tell of his travels throughout the world and his meetings with famous writers and artists.
