Letters of an Indian judge to an English gentlewoman

1978
Books
From a half-hour conversation at a party, between the wife of an English colonel and a young Indian judge educated in England, sprang this lifelong correspondence. It is a first-hand record of the last days of the Raj and a personal account of the life of an Indian caught between two cultures.

Notes:
Originally published: London : Lovat Dickson, 1934."These letters were first published anonymously over forty years ago with a publisher's note vouching for their authenticity. In recent years some critics have suggested that the letters must have been edited or partially re-written before publication. Others have claimed that the entire book is a work of fiction written by the 'English Gentlewoman', now known to be the late Dorothy Black, author of over eighty novels. In view of the inconclusive nature of the evidence this edition is published as non-fiction, leaving it open to each reader to judge the book's authenticity for himself"--publisher's note, p.[5]
